"Como Agua Para Chocolate"

In the film “ Como agua para chocolate” food played a significant role when portraying each character and their national identities. In the film, as you can see, tita lives a very “strict” life. Having to follow their family rituals by caring for her mom until she passes, causes rita to have to stand by and watch her first love marry her sister. Pedro marrying tita’s sister did not stop their love from blossoming and throughout the film you’ll able to see how tita uses food to show her love for Pedro. Tita had prepared a meal, one of the dishes being quail with rose petals, which helps tita to signify and project her love for Pedro. The meal that she had prepared, was so powerful that the whole table was able to sense just how strong she had felt. Also it helped tita to reveal to Pedro how she physically yawned for him. Last but not least, you can also see that tita prepared the meal to show rebellious against her mom. Seeing how angry it made her mom gave tita some type of ease. Tita for once was able to speak up for herself against her mom without physically speaking. This scene was incredible because it displayed so many significant events with just one meal.

In the film, a Mexican tradition is also conveyed through food. Whether it was the meal itself or the recipe, in some way it showed the significance of Mexican history and their Cultural ways. For example one of dishes made was known as Christmas cakes. In the Mexican culture they utilize these cakes to celebrate the three kings known as Balthazar, Melchior, and Caspar. This tradition is celebrated on the 6th day of January, within the Latin families. Another one of the dishes that I would briefly touch up on to help see how food plays an significant part of Mexican history is the Chile peppers in walnut sauce. The Mexican dish consist of stuffed Chile that is topped with a walnut based cream and pomegranate seeds, when combined created the color of the Mexican flag. The dish is a celebration of Independence Day for Mexico, which is usually celebrated through the months of august and September. As you can see the two of the meals I mentioned, helped us to understand important metaphors that the food conveyed in importance of Mexican history.
