In the film “ Como agua para chocolate” food played a significant role when portraying each character and their national identities. In the film, as you can see, tita lives a very “strict” life. Having to follow their family rituals by caring for her mom until she passes, causes rita to have to stand by and watch her first love marry her sister. Pedro marrying tita’s sister did not stop their love from blossoming and throughout the film you’ll able to see how tita uses food to show her love for Pedro. Tita had prepared a meal, one of the dishes being quail with rose petals, which helps tita to signify and project her love for Pedro. The meal that she had prepared, was so powerful that the whole table was able to sense just how strong she had felt. Also it helped tita to reveal to Pedro how she physically yawned for him. Soylent Green is a film that occurs in the year of 2020, in New York City. In the film Soylent Green, food was use metaphorically to introduce the problems that was presented throughout the film. For example one of the main problems that are revealed is the food shortage that is happening because of global warming. Metaphorically food helps us to see the crises that New York City is facing. In the film you noticed that when Cheryl walks in to the butcher shop, the piece of meat that she is given was “special”.  It being considered “special” shows that the piece of beef is scarce. Throughout the film you also notice all the other problems that New York City is facing, like, housing and water shortages. The scenes that reveal these problems are the people you see sleeping in the hallway of thorn place and when thorn is sent to investigate a crime how his thrill for water was ultimately high. Love and romance is revealed through the relationships between Martha and Lina and then Lina and Mario. The relationships between Martha and Lina can be described as a connection that lacks both love and companionship in many ways. The way that they both needed to be loved worked out in a way that was beneficial to them both. Lina craved to be loved by someone else, while Martha needed to love and care for someone else other than herself. Martha whole world revolved around here career and her  love for food. Even when regarding her love life, her love for food still played an humongous role. For example, when trying to have dinner in a romantic way with Sam she couldn’t help but to go back to her comfort zone which is food. Why did you choose this class? I want to  expand  my  knowledge  on the art of food & films.  Ive always watched cooking shows and  documentaries about food. I'm curious to know how different cultures will express their love of food in society.  What are you hoping to accomplish in the course? I am hoping to gain  knowledge on how film can depict and express different cultural experiences.      What is y our favorite film/ food film and why?   My favorite food film is ratatoullie. this movie gave me interest to learn how to start cooking. the animated cartoon movie played a huge role on my childhood.
